It has been an honor for me to dedicate the Feature Post this year to Angeles Arrien’s book Living in Gratitude A Journey That Will Change Your Life. The following Thanksgiving Prayer offered by the Haudenosaunee Nation truly speaks to this month’s topic ‘November is Seeing Gratefulness’. Together these peoples comprise the oldest living participatory democracy on earth. The United States representative democracy, fashioned by such central authors as Benjamin Franklin and Thomas Jefferson, drew much inspiration from this confederacy of nations which has been practicing democracy for over 800 years.
Thanksgiving Prayer of the Haudenosaunee Nation
We return thanks to our mother, the earth,
Which sustains us.
We return thanks to the rivers and streams,
of Which supply us with water.
We return thanks to all herbs,
Which furnish medicines for the cure of our diseases.
We return thanks to the moon and the stars,
Which have given us their light
When the sun was gone.
We return thanks to the sun,
That has looked upon the earth with a beneficent eye.
Lastly, we return thanks to the Great Spirit,
In Whom is embodied all goodness,
And Who directs all things
for the good of Her children.
