Take An 'AWE' Meditation Walk

“What is an AWE walk?  An awe walk is a walk within a place of meaning and beauty, where your sole task is to encounter something that amazes and transcends, be it big or small.”  This is from Mindful Magazine’s April, 2017, issue titled,  A Guided Awe Walk Meditation.  We all have felt those awe moments when walking in a wooded forest, a botanical garden, a blossoming desert, or on a sandy beach.  I believe we take our meditation walks with eyes, ears, and hearts open.  There will always be something that brings us to that ‘AWE’ moment.  It can be touching the bark of a tree, seeing a rabbit grazing or listening to nature’s surrounding choir.

‘AWE’ Walking Meditation Practice

1) Take a deep breath in. Count to six as you inhale and six as you exhale. Feel the air move through your nasal passages and hear the sound of your breath. We’ll come back to this breath throughout the walk.

2) Feel your feet on the ground and listen to the surrounding sounds. Return to your breath. Count to six while you inhale and six as you exhale.

3) Shift your awareness now so that you are open to what is around you.  Notice things that are vast and unexpected; or things that surprise, and delight. Take a deep breath in. Count to six as you inhale and six as you exhale.

4) Let your attention be open in exploration for what inspires ‘AWE’. Your attention might appreciate vast spaces, and the sounds and sights within them. You might shift to small patterns, for example of the sorrel on the ground, or the veins on leaves, or a cluster of tiny mushrooms.

5) Bring your attention back to the breath. Count to six as you inhale and six as you exhale. Coming out of these experiences of awe, we often feel a sense of wonder. Wonder happens when we are delighted by that which surprises us, and we are moved to find explanations and deep meaning.

Peacock Ore (also known as Bornite) brings freshness and newness to ones life.  This stone stimulates one to seek further heights and initiates the ability to enjoy joyfulness in the moment.   It protects from negative energy and provides insight of blockages in life which stop us from moving on. If you are having a bad day or have lost the feeling of joy in your life, try wearing or carrying this stone around with you for a while.  Bornite can bring you the ability to see and appreciate  happiness, as well as a feeling of acceptance that all is exactly as it should be, exactly as it is!

Peacock Ore is one of the strongest physical healing stones in the mineral kingdom.  It has the ability to align every chakra. When used for healing, especially in the area above the navel chakra, it assists in the flow of adrenalin. Bornite will increase alkalinity. Also, it can be used to lower calcium levels in the body. This would work well in treating arthritic conditions.  When used below the navel chakra, the Peacock Ore will increase the acidic level and lower one’s alkaline level. In this position it will also help lower the sodium content of the body.

A Road In Our Hearts

Chief Luther Standing Bear’s Words of Wisdom  

“There is a road in the hearts of all of us,

hidden and seldom traveled,

which leads to an unknown, secret place.

The old people came literally to love the soil,

and they sat or reclined on the ground,

with a feeling of being close to a mothering power.

Luther Standing Bear  was a notable educator, philosopher, and actor during the twentieth century.  Standing Bear left the confinement of the reservation, but continued his responsibilities, as an Oglala Lakota chief, fighting to preserve Lakota heritage and sovereignty.  He was actively at the forefront of a Progressive movement to change government policy toward Native Americans.  On February 20, 1939, Luther Standing Bear died in Huntington Beach, California, at age of 70 of the flu while on the set of the film Union Pacific.  He was buried in the Hollywood Forever Cemetery,  far from his Lakota homeland, with his sacred pipe.

To American Indians, the wolf is said to be “teacher medicine”.   Wolf  has much to teach us, if only we will listen.  Wolf spirit teaches us to have balance between our personal needs and those of the family and community.  They are committed and loyal to the pack and find their place within the group.   The following information can be found in my favorite reference book, Animal Spirit Guides, by Steven D. How To Worry Smarter

How To Worry Smarter

Today I stumbled across Dr. Beverly Potter’s little book,  The Worrywart’s Companion, Twenty-one Ways To Soothe Yourself and Worry Smart.  How many of us would be a more balanced woman, if we could only worry smarter?  The author points out that “Worrywarts worry themselves sick”,  and like a mantra, silently chant their fears.  However, it doesn’t bring serenity, it only generates anxiety and we know the emotional mind can trigger disease.

How To Worry Smarter

Healthy coping requires a balance of different thinking styles.  Creativity expert Edward DeBono in, The Six Thinking Hats, identified six basic styles of thinking: objective, emotive, supportive, possibility, critical, and strategic. Negative worrying habits can be replaced when practicing any of the following different thinking styles to provide a constructive mental approach dealing with worrisome situations.  For each style of thinking there is a corresponding question.  Asking this question will automatically set the corresponding thinking style in motion.

How To Worry Smarter

Practice Flexible Thinking

Objective Thinking:  Ask yourself  “What are the facts?”  Practicing objective thinking helps bring you back into balance.  It reminds you that the actual facts are not the same as the disastrous scenarios envisioned when worrywarting.

Emotive Thinking:  Ask yourself  ”What am I feeling?”  Look at all of your feelings, whether or not they seem justified, make sense, and even contradict each other.  Physical sensations can be linked to emotions.  It also is important to consider your preferences of likes, dislikes, values and desires, which are ways of looking at what you want or don’t want out of a situation.How To Worry Smarter

Supportive ThinkingAsk yourself  “What is working?”  Supportive thinking looks at the positive aspects of a situation and focuses on ways to enhance them.  Supportive thinking often feels unnatural to worrywarts who tend to focus on weaknesses, what’s wrong, what’s not working.  Engaging in supportive thinking brings you back to a more balanced view of the situation.

Possibility ThinkingAsk yourself “What’s possible here?”  When engaged in possibility thinking, let your creativity run.    Don’t try to be logical or realistic.  The key is to allow your mind the unfettered imaginative freedom of a child at play.  Avoid critiquing your ideas.  Even the most unrealistic or implausible scenarios often contain seeds of valuable new ideas which in the end turn out to have practical applications.How To Worry Smarter

Critical Thinking:  Ask yourself  “What’s wrong? What could go wrong?”  Critical thinking is where worrywarts get stuck.  It looks for what is wrong and is linear and logical.  However, critical thinking is an important skill.  Without the ability to make an accurate assessment of the real risks in a worrisome situation, you are likely to encounter many avoidable difficulties.  In order for critical thinking to be helpful, it must occur within the context of a full range of thinking skills.

Strategic ThinkingAsk yourself  “What’s the next step?”  Once you have engaged each of the preceding five thinking styles, you will have identified the facts of the worrisome situation.  Hopefully you have determined how you feel about it, what you want and what you don’t want to happen.  Final step is to view the worrisome situation from a detached perspective.  Chances are your next step will be some combination of the six thinking styles.  Keep practicing Flexible Thinking, it will become easier.How To Worry Smarter

March Tapping Fears Away

EFT (Emotional Freedom Technique) is a very simple and effective tapping practice for adults as well as children.  It is universally used by professionals as well as novice for physical, emotional, and performance issues.  Before beginning a series of tapping, rate the intensity of how you are feeling from 0-10 (10 being the most upset).  This will measure how often you may need to repeat the tapping series. The Tapping is done with two or more fingertips.  Read the script out loud, allowing your emotions to be heard.March Tapping Fear Away

Start with the following Karate Chop Set-up Script For Fear:

Begin tapping side hand and repeat the following out loud before each of the rounds you do.

1.  Even though I am so afraid and don’t know what to do. I love and accept myself.

2.  Even though my stomach does a flip whenever I think of.___,  and how afraid I am.   I love and accept myself anyway.

3.  Even though I don’t feel in control,  and that makes me even more afraid, I deeply and completely love and accept myself.

You can tap with the fingertips of either hand, most people use their dominant hand.  Where there are two identical points on each side of the body, you can choose to do only one side or both.    Again, reading the script out loud allows emotions to be heard.

Under Arm:  I don’t want this…
