I thought it would be interesting to look at two of Dr. Bernie S. Siegel’s Simple Practices for a Healthy Body, Mind and Spirit that he shares in his book 101 Exercises For The Soul.   It is always great to add exercises for one’s healing journey.  

Exercise #46 – Tools For Healing – Start A Treasure Chest

Dr. Siegel points out that when we have bad days and if feels like “life suck’s”, most of us need help finding our way.  With this exercise, you can identify and gather up the tools you need.  1.  What tools would help?  Material and physical tools can be helpful (take a walk, visit a special place, read a book, or go to a movie. ).  2.  What emotional and spiritual tools can you rely on?  (These may include a relative, a friend, meditate, prayer, or listen to nature ). 3.  Write down your list of resource tools on slips of paper. This can be anything that gives you joy.  Take a small box, label it your Treasure Chest, and place the slips in for safekeeping.  4.  In times of distress or trouble, open your chest and take out the tools you need.  5.  Place your Treasure Chest where you will see it every day.

Dr. Bernie S. Siegel points out in  this exercise how many of us become preoccupied with our fears and worries.   He states that there is a lot to be said for the saying “Out of sight, out of mind.”  We don’t want to become unconscious of our fears and the way they affect us.  However, for this exercise we will create a new home for them.  1.  Pick out a special box and create a sanctuary for your fears and worries. 2.  Each time you notice fear surfacing write it down.  3.   Include what you are afraid of, the event that created the feeling, and how it challenges your peace of mind.  4.   Visualize that once these fears are locked in the box, they are turned over to divine guardians for safe keeping.   5.  Your fears will eventually dissolve, and when they do, discard the notes related to them in a ceremonial dumping, burning or burying.  Hopefully you will no longer have to see or feel the discarded fears ever again.

Remove Fear Freom Body With Color

There are many ways to introduce and use color for helping to remove fear from the body.  Below is a Color Chart showing what fear is held by different body locations and what color to use.  Here are simple suggestions how to introduce colors recommended for specific body fear:

1.   Pick up color felt swatches at local craft store.  These can be cut to any size, however, (no smaller than  4″ x 4″ works best).  Take some quiet time and place your felt on the needed area(s).

2.  Take time to relax and place appropriate colored stones on the areas that need attention is also very helpful.  I would recommend repeating as often as needed.

3.  Try relaxing during quiet time and practice visualizing breathing color needed to help heal the body fear you are holding.  There is nothing wrong with working with all three of these suggestions together.

How To Worry Smarter

Today I stumbled across Dr. Beverly Potter’s little book,  The Worrywart’s Companion, Twenty-one Ways To Soothe Yourself and Worry Smart.  How many of us would be a more balanced woman, if we could only worry smarter?  The author points out that “Worrywarts worry themselves sick”,  and like a mantra, silently chant their fears.  However, it doesn’t bring serenity, it only generates anxiety and we know the emotional mind can trigger disease.

Healthy coping requires a balance of different thinking styles.  Creativity expert Edward DeBono in, The Six Thinking Hats, identified six basic styles of thinking: objective, emotive, supportive, possibility, critical, and strategic. Negative worrying habits can be replaced when practicing any of the following different thinking styles to provide a constructive mental approach dealing with worrisome situations.  For each style of thinking there is a corresponding question.  Asking this question will automatically set the corresponding thinking style in motion.

Practice Flexible Thinking

Objective Thinking:  Ask yourself  “What are the facts?”  Practicing objective thinking helps bring you back into balance.  It reminds you that the actual facts are not the same as the disastrous scenarios envisioned when worrywarting.

Emotive Thinking:  Ask yourself  ”What am I feeling?”  Look at all of your feelings, whether or not they seem justified, make sense, and even contradict each other.  Physical sensations can be linked to emotions.  It also is important to consider your preferences of likes, dislikes, values and desires, which are ways of looking at what you want or don’t want out of a situation.How To Worry Smarter

Supportive ThinkingAsk yourself  “What is working?”  Supportive thinking looks at the positive aspects of a situation and focuses on ways to enhance them.  Supportive thinking often feels unnatural to worrywarts who tend to focus on weaknesses, what’s wrong, what’s not working.  Engaging in supportive thinking brings you back to a more balanced view of the situation.

Possibility ThinkingAsk yourself “What’s possible here?”  When engaged in possibility thinking, let your creativity run.    Don’t try to be logical or realistic.  The key is to allow your mind the unfettered imaginative freedom of a child at play.  Avoid critiquing your ideas.  Even the most unrealistic or implausible scenarios often contain seeds of valuable new ideas which in the end turn out to have practical applications.How To Worry Smarter

Critical Thinking:  Ask yourself  “What’s wrong? What could go wrong?”  Critical thinking is where worrywarts get stuck.  It looks for what is wrong and is linear and logical.  However, critical thinking is an important skill.  Without the ability to make an accurate assessment of the real risks in a worrisome situation, you are likely to encounter many avoidable difficulties.  In order for critical thinking to be helpful, it must occur within the context of a full range of thinking skills.

Strategic ThinkingAsk yourself  “What’s the next step?”  Once you have engaged each of the preceding five thinking styles, you will have identified the facts of the worrisome situation.  Hopefully you have determined how you feel about it, what you want and what you don’t want to happen.  Final step is to view the worrisome situation from a detached perspective.  Chances are your next step will be some combination of the six thinking styles.  Keep practicing Flexible Thinking, it will become easier.How To Worry Smarter

Listen To Your Body

I have enjoyed reading Ruth White’s book called Using Your Chakras.  She mentions “our bodies speak a very simple even primitive language.”  She goes on to explain that many times we ignore bodily symptoms and probably an initial look at the language of the symptoms may help us to understand the symbolic message they are giving.  For example, how many of us find that our back or neck is our most vulnerable area?

The author suggests when you get a neck  pain, ask the following questions.  Each question must always be reversed.  It can lead you to explore how it links with your emotions.

Listen To Your Body•  Am I being stiff-necked about certain things?  Or.  Could I possibly  gain from being more stiff-necked about something?

•  Is something (or someone!) being a ‘pain in the neck’ to me?  Or.  Am I being a ‘pain in the neck’ to myself or someone else?

•  Am I ’sticking my neck out’ unnecessarily about some matter?  Or.  Should I try to  ’stick my neck out’ more with a present situation?

Similarly, if there is back pain, you need to ask:

•  Am I being too rigid? Or.  Am I being too flexible?

•  Is someone ‘on my back’? Or.   Am I on someone else’s back?

•  Am I carrying too much for myself or other? Or.   Am I carrying enough or taking enough responsibility?

Above exercise can be used as a guide on how to listen and begin to understand our bodily messages.

Shoulders hold our Emotional Burdens

 Shoulders Hold our Burdens

Today I want to spend time on the Burden Areas located at the shoulders.  The right shoulder is the OUTER WORLD – Burdens and Responsibilities of carrying emotional weight of others on  this shoulder.   The left shoulder is the INNER WORLD – Burdens and Responsibilities of carrying emotional weight of yourself on this shoulder.  I personally know that carried emotional issues can become physical issues, if not released.

The OUTER WORLD (right shoulder) emotional issues could include:  dealing with serious family health concerns, addiction of a loved one, depression of someone close, and responsibility of the care-taking of an terminally ill person or feeling responsible for family unity.

The INNER WORLD (left shoulder) emotional issues could include:  emotional baggage carried from childhood memories, grief over loss of loved one, trauma of physical or sexual abuse, loss of self-esteem, depression, unfulfilled dreams, feeling stuck, guilt, frustration, loneliness, and much more that we carry regarding our self.  We know that tight tense shoulders generally bunch up around our ears, restricting the flow of blood to brain.

Shoulders Hold Our Emotional BurdensHERE IS AN EXERCISE TO HELP RELAX YOUR SHOULDERS: 

1.  Round your shoulders forward and even sink your chest. Un- hunch the shoulders, spread the collar bones, lift your chest and relax your neck and jaw.

2.  Take your left hand and start tapping at your right shoulder joint and tap up to where shoulder joins neck.  Do this several times and then switch and  tapping your left shoulder with your right hand. Emotional releases sometimes happen during energy healing, Reiki and massage sessions.

3.  I believe you can release some of the emotions stored in your shoulders while doing the simple exercise to relax your shoulders mentioned above by repeating:

  “I RELEASE,  I RELAX,  I RELEASE”

I hope you might experiment releasing both any Inner World or Outer World Emotional Burdens you might be holding during this Holiday Season and throughout the year.

Healing - Sitting In Anger

Anger is a response of fear, self-absorption, and self-inflation which can lead to indifference and hatred.  Most often anger is an overreaction to a situation.  There is nothing wrong with anger, but one needs to be able to manage anger in a healthy way.  How do we use visualization to work with our anger?  Dr. Alberto Villoldo, Ph.D. writes in his book, The Four Insights-Wisdom, Power, and Grace of the Earthkeepers,  ”As a form of a prayer, visualization…uses the language of images”.

To relieve anger, author Gerald Epstein, M.D. recommends the following Sitting Through Anger Exercise in his book Healing Visualizations Creating Health Through Imagery:

1.  Close your eyes.  Breathe out three times.

2.  See yourself sitting inside your anger.  Look at it.  Decide how you want to release and dispose of it.

3.  Breathe out once, and after ridding yourself of anger, place in the newly vacated space an opposite image and visualize sitting in the center of a beautiful lotus flower.

4.  You might want to visualize yourself floating or sitting in the center of clouds.

5.  Remember it is best to find your own images coming directly from your own experience.

6.  Then open your eyes, knowing that the anger is gone.

What Are Master Numbers?

Numerology believes every number has its vibrations, meaning, characteristics and influence.  Yet there are three numbers to pay extra-special attention to: 11, 22 and 33.   These are called Master Numbers.  What makes these numbers so … masterful?

The number 11 represents instinct, and is the most intuitive of all numbers. It is your connection to your subconscious, to gut feeling and knowledge without rationality. With 33 represented in one’s Numerology chart, that person is probably highly knowledgeable, but also fact-checks before preaching ideas or ideals.  Master Number 33 is only significant if it’s one of your Core numbers — Life Path, Heart’s Desire, Personal Expression, Personality or Maturity numbers.What Are Master Numbers?

Dry Brushing Lymphatic System

Dry Brush Lymphatic SystemThe most important benefits of the dry skin brush technique are the improvements to lymphatic function. It strengthens the immune system, stimulates hormone producing glands, and stimulates circulation.  It will help to rid your body of waste, toxins, viruses and bacteria. The end result is more energy, vitality, and less sickness. Dry Brushing The Lymphatic SystemThe entire body should be brushed, including your back, but skip the face and scalp. Use long sweeping strokes starting from the bottom of your feet upwards, and from the hands towards the shoulders, and on the torso in an upward direction to help drain the lymph back towards your heart. The lymphatic fluid only flows in one direction which is towards the heart, so it is important to dry brush in the same direction. 1.  Use light pressure in areas where the skin is thin and harder pressure on places like the soles of the feet. Don’t overdo it 2. Skin brushing can be done daily, preferably first thing in the morning. A thorough skin brushing takes about 10 minutes, but any time spent brushing prior to bathing will benefit the body. If you are feeling ill, increasing the treatments to twice a day can be beneficial. 3. Avoid sensitive areas like bruises and anywhere the skin is broken, such as areas of skin rash, wounds, cuts or infections 4. For added benefit: finish up with your regular shower and end with three hot and cold cycles. Turn on the water as hot as you can take it for several seconds, then as cold as you can handle it, then hot, then cold for three cycles.

Basic Directions for Brushing

1. You will use a light touch with this soft-natural bristled brush. The best time to brush is right before you get into the shower. 2.  Start at your feet and brush vigorously in circular motions. 3.  Continue brushing up your calves and thighs. 4. Next brush your hands and up your arms. 5. Proceed upward on your abdomen toward your heart using a circular counter-clockwise strokes 6.  You will brush downward on your neck, shoulders to the middle of back and upward from bottom of back to middle of back. Remember always brushing in the direction of the heart, so downward on areas above the heart and upward on areas below your heart. 7. Use light pressure on the breasts and any other sensitive areas. 8.  After Brushing follow with a hot shower.  Make sure you wash your brush with soap and water on a weekly basis.

Balancing Ying & Yang Energy

How can we direct our everyday lifestyle choices to help balance the two energetic polarities referred to as Yin and Yang by Chinese Medicine?   Balancing our Yin (feminine energy) and Yang (masculine energy) establishes harmony within the mind, body, and spirit.

Balancing Yin & Yang EnergyYin is restorative energy.  It allows our mind-body to slow down, relax, and rest.  Yin encompasses  the elements that nourish our body. Concentration, determination to follow beliefs, and morals are also connected to Yin energy.  When we cut ourselves off from Yin energy with excessive Yang energy, we lose the ability to fluidly move and adapt to different circumstances, be receptive to others, and connect with our creative inspiration.  Instead of feeling peaceful and rested throughout our day, weBalancing Yin & Yang Energy become rigid, agitated and overextended.  There is a feeling of continually needing to keep moving and keep doing.

Yang is fiery energy.  It  is the action behind every process between your mind and body.  Yang  drives and motivates all your emotional, physical, and spiritual decisions.  This is the energy you feel when you are moving your energy out into the world, focused on completing a task, and associated with the practical, logical thinking of the left hemisphere of the brain, as well as an extroverted personality.  However, Yang deficiency caused by excessive Yin energy, is when we have a hard time creating the experiences that we want in the world.  We lose sight of our goals, lose inspiration to create the things that we want for ourselves, and can slip into depression.

The following suggestions are all beneficial ways to balance your Yin and Yang Energy:

Nutrition – take time to eat health foods instead of grazing on empty junk.

Water – plenty of pure, clean water will help flush out toxins and rehydrate you. Most people underestimate their need for water.

Meditation – quality quiet time to get in touch with yourself.  Realize where you’ve become deficient and work to correct the deficiency.

Tai chi – movements balance body, mind, and spirit. Helps recognize disharmony before it gets out of hand.
