One of the most helpful and challenging books for me to read was The Sevenfold Journey, Reclaiming Mind, Body & Spirit Through The Chakras, by Anodea Judith & Selene Vega. This book was written from the material used for workshop courses taught by these two women. The authors’ book is now included by many alternative healing schools in their curriculum. Each chapter has journal exercises. I did find these assignments challenging, sometimes difficult to face my truth, but when completed, I gained a new awareness of myself and my body.
Here is an example of Journal Exercise: Chakra Body Map from The Seven Fold Journey, Introduction page 32.
“On a large piece of paper draw an outline of your body. Don’t worry about whether it is artistic or perfect. Color in the figure with crayons or colored pencils, letting the colors represent how that part of you feels. Let the colors flow outside of your body where you feel most free, show the blocks where you experience them with dark or angular shapes. Ask yourself how connected you feel with your ground, with the earth. How connected with spirit? How connected is your heart? Try not to overly intellectualize but to feel it. Acknowledge your feelings without judging yourself…When your picture is complete, look at it as a whole. What impressions does it give you? How do you feel about what you are looking at? Do you feel compassion, judgment, attraction, sorrow, satisfaction?”
(I used a long piece of butcher paper and asked a friend to trace me. I started dissecting this exercise a little at a time. Then all of sudden I was lost in the exercise. I was shocked how much time spent and what I discovered.)
