Nature's Healing Gift - Sunflowers

While on my early walk, I pass a Community Pea Patch Garden and yesterday a tall stately plant caught my attention. Sunflowers always brings a smile to my heart. That particular morning it also brought a song to my voice.  Thankfully there were only a few bunnies, squirrels, and crows wondering about the crazy lady singing about Sunflowers.   Well this also peaked my interest to research this nature’s gift, which is always fun to share.

Wild sunflowers color the earth, bring joy to flower gardens and ornament homes as a cheerful bouquet. The color yellow, especially natural yellow, is proven to be a mood lifter that energizes a space and enlivens your spirits. These plants are native to North America, Peru and Mexico. Both the Inca’s and the Aztecs worshipped Sunflowers.  The seeds, flowers, leafs, stem and root all have uses.   Sunflower seeds are rich in magnesium, potassium, selenium, zinc and iron. Eating these seeds improve digestion, brain power, and functioning of the cardiovascular system. Sunflower oil prevents heart diseases and is a great skin moisture retainer.

Fukushima power plant in Japan has urged residents to plant Sunflowers because of leaking radioactive material.  They help to absorb cesium from the soil. Sunflowers and plants with similar biology were also used in radioactive cleanup efforts after the Chernobyl disaster in the Ukraine.  These happy  looking plants represent a hopeful beacon and a symbol of reconstruction.  What a magnificent thought to encourage more Sunflowers to be planted all over the world!

Singing & Humming Heals

Singing & Humming Heals

The voice carries healing energy, or intent, and when we sing or hum with love, we can bring ourselves into a state of ‘harmony’ resulting in health.  Through sound healing it may be possible to bring the diseased organ into harmony with the rest of the body.   A pilot study published in the British Journal of Nursing found that singing therapy could greatly reduce the anxiety and depression patients can experience following a major surgery. The effect was strong enough that the authors suggested doctors prescribe therapy before trying antidepressants.

Singing & Humming Heals“Nothing accesses the inner world of feelings, sensations, memories, and associations as directly as music does,” says Diane Austin, adjunct associate professor of music therapy at New York University and executive director of the Music Psychotherapy Center in New York. “The voice is like a bridge from your heart to your head. Singing freely releases what’s locked up in your body.”

In a session, Austin might start with deep, slow breathing and then suggest that you turn each exhalation into a wordless sound, or that you improvise a melody while free-associating words. The exercises take surprising and revealing turns—playful, silly, angry. “Your voice doesn’t lie,” she says. “You can have all sorts of self-knowledge, but through deep breathing and using your voice, you can get closer to what’s really going on for you.”

  • Breathe out loud: Lie on your back on the floor. Relax, breathe deeply, and as you exhale make a sound. “Just let any sound out that wants to come out,” she says. “Play. Be imaginative like a child.”
  • Tone: While lying down, sing a long, sustained note on a vowel sound. Take a breath and continue, allowing the pitch to change as it wants. Keep it up for about ten minutes. “This is like meditation,” Austin says.Singing & Humming Heals

Humming may be one of the simplest, most natural things a person can do, yet the benefits are surprisingly far reaching. By humming one of your favorite tunes or the  sound “Om”, will relax  you mentally and physically.   It can bring down blood pressure, reduce the risk of a heart attack or stroke, help with sleep difficulties, and sinusitis.   Humming combined with breath is a powerful way to release and let go of stuck energy and tension.  Great for clearing and refreshing your throat chakra.  Imagine filling your head with the vibration of a calming “humm” for one, two or even 5 minutes.  It’s bliss.

Inspiring Woman - Harriet Tubman

Harriet Tubman is perhaps the most well-known of all the Underground Railroad’s “conductors.” During a ten-year span she made 19 trips into the South and escorted over 300 slaves to freedom.  The Underground Railroad (UR) was not underground nor was it a railroad. It was called “underground” because of its secretive nature and “railroad” because it was an emerging form of transportation. In all of her journeys she “never lost a single passenger.”  Robert Moss wrote in his book The Dreamer’s Book of the Dead, that Harriet used her dreams and visions for guidance on her dangerous missions.  She was guided by dreams to make her own escape, and guided by visions to return to the South bring out others; her dreams showed her how to smuggle people safely past the posses and bloodhounds.Inspiring Woman - Harriet Tubman

Around 1844 she married a free black named John Tubman and took his last name. (She was born Araminta Ross; she later changed her first name to Harriet, after her mother).   During 1849, in fear that she, along with the other slaves on the plantation, was to be sold, Tubman resolved to run away. She set out one night on foot. With some assistance from a friendly white woman, Tubman was on her way. She followed the North Star by night, making her way to Pennsylvania and soon after to Philadelphia, where she found work and saved her money.  Tubman had made the perilous trip to slave country 19 times by 1860, including one especially challenging journey in which she rescued her 70-year-old parents.

Inspiring Woman - Harriet Tubman

As a modern times woman, I have so much respect and admiration for woman’s strength and determination.  Especially after reading about what health struggles she had to deal with most of her life.  When Harriet was a teenager, she found herself in between a slave who was trying to escape and his overseer. The overseer threw a two-pound weight at the man which struck Harriet in the head.  For the rest of her life, she had seizures and excruciating headaches, and would suddenly fall unconscious. When she was in her late seventies (in the 1890s), desperate to relieve her suffering, she underwent brain surgery — with no anesthesia. She bit down on a bullet, as she had seen Civil War soldiers do during amputations, and afterwards said, “He sawed open my skull, and raised it up, and now it feels more comfortable.”  There has never been a movie made to tell the story of the female called “Moses”. Hopefully, as we start receiving and spending the new $20 bills, we will think about this amazing woman and be inspired by her.

Tuesday's Healing Word - Decisiveness

Decisiveness is firmness of mind in taking a stand or making a decision.  It requires one to be both courageous and discerning.  Being decisive, we are content with our decisions and do not second-guess ourselves.

Tuesday's Healing Word - Decisiveness

At times, a choice appears and we must make it instantly, without hesitation, prompted by a deep knowing that it is right and timely.  Linda Kavelin Popov, founder of The Virtues Project™ gives us the following:

Tuesday's Healing Word - Decisiveness

that the gifts such as logic, decisiveness,

and strength are just as feminine

as intuition and emotional connection.

She values and uses all of her gifts.

Heart Energy Balancing & More

Heart Energy Balancing

It is important to know that the Heart Chakra is the balance point for our entire energy system.    Balancing the heart brings a life-supporting calm to us, and an ability to relate positively to the world around us. The layout shown in the illustration above is from Simon Lilly & Susan Lilly’s book, Using Crystals For Healing, helps stabilize all the energies of the heart.

Balancing the Heart Chakra’s Energies

Heart Energy Balancing & More1.  First place a small Rose Quartz on the Heart Chakra at the center of the chest.

2.  Take four Green Tourmalines and make a cross along the axis of the body around the Rose Quartz.  Clear Quartz can be used if Tourmalines are unavailable.  (If any stones used have natural points, be sure that the points are facing outwards. These outward pointed stones ensure that a relaxing calm is established).

3.  Between the four Tourmalines make a second diagonal cross using Smoky Quartz.

4.  Stay in this heart layout for five to ten minutes.  This pattern will release stress from the heart while balancing and grounding its energies.

Herkimer Diamond Layout

1.  This can be used following the treatment above or done separately.  Beneath the Heart Chakra is another small energy center that is concerned with holding and bringing to fruition our most cherished wishes and desires.

2.  A Herkimer Diamond placed  just under the heart will help access this energy, bringing a sense of clarity and direction when there is confusion.

3.  Stay in this heart layout for five or ten minutes.  Afterwards to feel more grounded, hold in your hands any red, black, or brown stones.

Roadrunner - Animal Spirit Guide

I became interested in the Roadrunner after receiving a session from a trained healer in shamanism. She saw a Roadrunner when journeying for me.  It brought back fond memories of my Dad because he spoke of these desert birds with much fondness.  The Hopi & Pueblo Indians believed that the Roadrunner provided protection against evil spirits.  Steven D. Farmer, PH.D, wrote the following in his book Animal Spirit Guides:

Roadrunner - Animal Spirit GuideIf Roadrunner shows up, it means:

•  There are situations occurring in your life that require you to think on your feet, change direction quickly, and adapt to the new course – which you are quite capable of doing.

•  This is a great time to make some plans and put them into action so that you can manifest whatever it is you want.

•  Explore and experiment with different ways you can benefit yourself and others spiritually, emotionally, and physically through the use of sound.

•  Be sure to take care of yourself first before you attempt to take care of others; that way you can be completely present when you’re in service to them.

•  Be willing to laugh at yourself and not take your quirks and idiosyncrasies too seriously.Roadrunner - Animal Spirit Guide

Call on Roadrunner When:

• You’re involved in a project, task, or game that requires mental dexterity and quick reflexes.  You need some mental and intellectual stimulation that has been lacking recently.

•  You want to be more lighthearted and go with the flow so you can enjoy life more fully.  You need a good laugh.

If Roadrunner is your Power Animal:

•  You are a doer and are happiest when busily involved with a project, whether for fun or profit.  Usually you are involved in several things at once,  yet get the tasks done when you need to.

•  You’re mind is constantly at work, always thinking and analyzing.  When you try to communicate your thoughts to others, you have to remind yourself to slow down.Roadrunner - Animal Spirit Guide
